Probation
The National Probation Service is a law enforcement agency and a public authority and is also an integral part in the rehabilitation of offenders back into the community and therefore is bound by the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and works in conjunction with the prisons, the courts and the police and currently employs over 21,000 staff. On an average day the probation service managers over 190,000 offenders 90% being male and 10% being female, and are committed to minimising the impact, especially serious crime, has in the community.
Each year the National Probation Service will assist the magistrate’s courts and the presiding judges in their sentencing decisions through the provision of about 246,000 pre-sentence reports, and 20,000 bail information reports. And also plays a vital and critical contribution to decisions about the early release of prisoners through the production of reports (approximately 87,000 annually) which combine risk and dangerousness assessments with community supervision plan proposals. We aim in this area of our website to provide information in relation to all different areas of the National Probation Service in areas such as housing, employment, drug issues and anything related to rehabilitation. Our organisation has also created a micro mini site, within our company structure, for every Probation Office in the UK, but unfortunately we only have limited basic information such as location, opening hours and contact numbers, but we do hope to expand on that information in the future.
